Choosing a wedding venue can be one of the biggest decisions in the entire wedding planning process. It dictates how many guests you can invite. It might influence the date that your wedding takes place. And it’s also a really important part of creating the right atmosphere and energy on your wedding day.
Luckily, there are thousands and thousands of venues suitable for weddings, not only in the UK but all around the world. So whilst it’s a big decision, you’ve got heaps of choice.
In this article however, I’m narrowing down those choices and just talking about some of the best wedding ceremony venues in Bristol. Whilst I’m more than happy (and very eager) to travel to be your wedding celebrant, Bristol is my home city, and I want to highlight some of the brilliant venues that are perfect for couples looking for something a bit quirky and creative.
Read on to discover my recommendations for the best wedding venues in Bristol if you’re planning a celebration of love that is alternative, intimate, or unique.
Does My Wedding Venue Need a License?
Before I launch into the fun stuff, I did want to talk about the topic of licensed wedding venues.
In order to be legally married to your partner, you need to have a marriage ceremony officiated by someone like a registrar in a venue that is licensed. This kind of wedding, whilst legally binding, is limited when it comes to what you can say during the ceremony, and obviously also is restricted to certain licensed venues.
As a celebrant, my wedding ceremonies do not legally marry you. I talk about this more on my weddings page, but if you’re having a celebrant-led ceremony and want to get legally married, you will also need to do the legal bit in another ceremony, preferably on another day.
I’m obviously biased, but I think that doing the legal marriage part and then having a wedding ceremony is the best option, as when you’re working with a celebrant you have total creative freedom over what your ceremony can include. And when it comes to venues, there are no limits whatsoever on where your wedding can take place (within reason, of course).
I have listed both licensed and unlicensed wedding venues in Bristol in this list, so that you can see which ones do have the option for a legal ceremony. But remember, if you choose a celebrant to lead your wedding ceremony, you don’t need to worry about a venue license!
Alternative Wedding Venues in Bristol
I’m starting my list with four alternative wedding venues in Bristol that are great for couples who want to throw a big party to celebrate their love. These places are all central in the city, are really easy to reach by most forms of transport, and are different enough from your ‘classic’ wedding venue whilst still being expertly equipped to handle all of your catering and entertainment requests.
Paintworks
Location: Southeast Bristol
Capacity: 80 – 200 guests
Marriage License: Yes

Paintworks Event Space is a little further out from the centre of the city, but is a brilliant option for an alternative Bristol wedding venue with a really contemporary feel to it. The space is part of a modernised industrial estate on the bank of the River Avon, and is a perfect blank canvas to personalise to suit your vision.
You can get legally married at Paintworks as well as just using the space for a ceremony and reception, making use of both the large indoor warehouse space and two outdoor courtyards. It’s a great accessible venue if you’ve got guests with mobility aids, and is also close enough to the city centre and train station that there are a lot of options for transport and accommodation.
Paintworks is a venue that gets used for all kinds of events, so only a small number of weddings take place here every year, which adds to the ‘alternative’ factor. For couples who want a modern, urban or stylishly minimalist wedding venue in Bristol, it’s a perfect choice.
St George’s
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: 40 – 180 guests
Marriage License: No
St George’s is an independent music venue in Bristol city centre that was converted from a 200-year-old Georgian church into a concert hall. Located just off Park Street, next to Brandon Hill and Cabot Tower, it’s a modern wedding venue that benefits from some stunning older Grade 2 listed architecture, with the bonus that the money you pay for the venue hire will go towards supporting it’s artistic and education programmes.
Throwing a wedding at St George’s means that you get access to a range of different spaces in the building, including the grand hall with a stage, a bar space, private rooms, and a stunning garden. The building also has stone steps leading up to it, which is ideal for a group photo!
A real advantage of this Bristol wedding venue is that the grand hall is really versatile, so you can hold your ceremony in there, lead your guests out to the bar and garden, return to the hall for a meal and then clear the space to create a dance floor. The fact that there’s a stage and that it’s a concert venue also means it’s an ideal choice if you want live music at your wedding, or just plenty of space for people to make their speeches.
The Mount Without
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: 70 – 150 guests
Marriage License: No

Probably one of the most popular wedding venues in Bristol, The Mount Without is a brilliant choice if you’re looking for something a little bit alternative. What was once a Norman church has been carefully restored into a fantastic independent event venue run by a team who love to champion local suppliers, so it’s no wonder it’s such a Bristolian favourite.
When you host a wedding at The Mount Without, you get access to the main church, crypt, mezzanine & gardens. Yes, you read that right. The crypt! What better place to host your wedding afterparty, or hold a really intimate feeling ceremony?
The team here are wedding experts, and you get plenty included in your hire package, with tables, chairs, glassware, bar staff, lighting and set up and cleaning help. It’s a fantastic option if you’d like to hold your wedding somewhere that feels artsy and unusual but also has the ambiance of an old church, as well as being really centrally located and easy for your guests to find.
Bristol Beacon
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: 30 – 500 guests
Marriage License: Yes

Another iconic music venue in Bristol that is also great for weddings, Bristol Beacon has recently been renovated and restored to create a truly unique space to get married. The space has been home to live music since 1867, and today is not host to a wide range of musicians and artists, but also plenty of other events in the city.
Weddings at the Bristol Beacon can really be personalised depending on your ideas, with a Victorian theatre available for ceremonies and receptions, an elegant tiled cocktail bar, a series of cellars with their own sound system and bar, and a contemporary restaurant space. If you really want to go all out, you can also hire their 2000-person Beacon Hall, which has a stage, three tiers of seating, and a large central space that can be cleared to make room for anything from dining to dancing.
Quirky Wedding Venues in Bristol
These next Bristol wedding venues are a little bit more on the ‘quirky’ side, so they’re brilliant choices if you’ve got weddings ideas that deserve to be hosted somewhere really interesting and unforgettable.
Circomedia
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: Up to 350 guests
Marriage License: No

Bristol has plenty of fantastically converted churches, and I think that one of the best quirky wedding venues in the city has got to be one of those. Circomedia is the home of a contemporary circus and physical theatre centre, and their venue in Portland Square in the centre of Bristol makes a brilliant location for an unforgettable wedding.
The historic Georgian church has been transformed into a space where students of all ages gather to learn circus skills and a variety of different contemporary circus and movement performances take place. With high ceilings, ornate pillars, and stained glass, it’s a really beautiful and interesting venue that can be decorated in a range of ways to suit the vision you have for your celebration.
Weddings taking place at Circomedia get full use of the venue’s bar and choices from a recommended list of local caterers. And of course, if you wanted to have circus performers at your wedding reception, you’ve got an impressive list of options and all the equipment you need to host your very own wedding cabaret!
Trinity Centre
Location: East Bristol
Capacity: 50 – 200 guests
Marriage License: Yes
The Trinity Centre is a much-loved music, events and community space in Bristol’s Old Market neighbourhood, very close to the city centre. A Grade 2 listed former church, it’s a fantastic choice for couples who want a quirky wedding venue that also has the advantage of being one of the more affordable options in this blog post, without any compromise on the quality of the space.
A highlight of weddings at Trinity is their upstairs Fyfe Hall, which has a floor to ceiling stained glass window that makes the perfect backdrop for a ceremony. Downstairs there is a larger hall for receptions that comes with a licensed bar and access to a kitchen, and you’ve also got a community garden and outdoor space with the option for a large tent for your guests as well.
If you’re after a quirky, DIY wedding then there’s no better venue in Bristol than Trinity. The versatility of the space means that it can be transformed to suit the style of your wedding, and you also have free reign when it comes to sorting out catering and other suppliers, giving you plenty of creative freedom to plan your big day.
SS Great Britain
Location: Bristol Harbourside
Capacity: Up to 160 guests
Marriage License: No

I was delighted when I discovered that you can get married on board the SS Great Britain. When it comes to quirky wedding venues in Bristol, it’s pretty hard to beat a legendary restored steamship floating in the city’s harbour, especially if you fancy a dash of adventure or even piratical style on your wedding day.
As the ship is open to the public as a tourist attraction during the day, weddings on the SS Great Britain can only take place from from 16:30 (guest arrival from 16:00) unless it’s on a Monday outside of school holidays, when the attraction is closed to the public. However, once the visitors for the day have gone home, you get access to the Promenade Deck, Weather Deck, First Class Dining Saloon and Hayward Saloon, giving you plenty of fantastic options for your ceremony, drinks reception, meal, and evening party.
Winterbourne Medieval Barn
Location: North Bristol
Capacity: 30 – 200
Marriage License: Yes

This unique wedding venue option isn’t exactly in Bristol, but it’s close enough and fun enough that it felt worthy of adding to my list. Originally built all the way back in 1342, Winterbourne Medieval Barn is a historic event venue that makes the ideal setting for a wedding with a rustic, historic, or fantasy theme.
This is a wedding venue that works best during the warmer months of the year, as you get access to lots of outdoor space as well as the traditional, timber-framed barn. It’s another venue that also lets you have total freedom when it comes to choosing the suppliers that you work for, so if you’ve got a specific vision in mind, the barn provides the perfect backdrop.
Intimate Wedding Venues in Bristol
The final section of my guide to the best wedding ceremony venues in Bristol is for couples who are looking to host more of an intimate celebration. This basically just means that these venues are smaller, and better suited to weddings where just your nearest and dearest are invited.
Radnor Rooms
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: 40 – 130
Marriage License: Yes

The Radnor Rooms are found in a grade 2 listed building right in the centre of Bristol, surrounded by the Old City neighbourhood. Behind a historic facade, you’ll find a reception room, a main room, and (most importantly I think) a rooftop terrace with a fireplace that means you can stay up there until late into the evening.
You can get legally married at The Radnor Rooms, but they are also only a short walk away from Bristol’s Registry Office. So if you want to enjoy both a legal marriage ceremony and a celebrant-led wedding on the same day, this venue makes it incredibly easy.
Catering is done in-house at this Bristol wedding venue, and you also get a fully licensed and staffed bar included in your hire of the space. It’s got character, it’s got charm, it’s right in the centre of Bristol, and it’s perfect for an intimate wedding.
Old Market Assembly
Location: Central Bristol
Capacity: Up to 150
Marriage License: No

The Old Market Assembly is another iconic Bristol venue for both music and theatre, as well as being one of the city’s beloved pubs. If you’re looking for a smaller wedding venue with character then this old assembly hall has just that.
You can have your wedding ceremony at Old Market Assembly on the venues small stage, with your guests gathered both in front of you and above you on the balcony. Not only do you have two floors for everyone to drink, dine and dance, but there’s also a beautiful little roof terrace that catches the sun right the way through the evening.
Old Market Assembly is well-loved for its roast dinners, and you get this excellent standard of catering when you book the space for you wedding as well. For a little bit of theatrical flair in a very diverse space, it’s a brilliant choice.
Mud Dock
Location: Bristol Harbourside
Capacity: Up to 100
Marriage License: Yes
When it comes to venues in Bristol that are truly unique, Mud Dock is one of those places that ticks all of the boxes. The ground floor is a cycling shop and bike repair space, but above that you’ve got a cafe and restaurant with one of the city’s best roof terraces.
It’s not just cycle enthusiasts who enjoy Mud Dock however, as it’s also available to hire as a wedding venue. Whether you want to legally tie the knot or just celebrate your commitment, it’s a great option for couples with a smaller guest list, especially in the summer months when you can make the most of the balcony.
Mud Dock offers a lot of freedom and flexibility when it comes to arranging the space for your wedding and planning the order of the day. The catering is done in house, and there’s also an extensive bar.
